![]() Black Beans Beans, beans good for the heart…. The more you eat the more you fart! Beans are indeed good for our hearts because they are such a good source of soluble fiber which has shown to have a positive effect on our cholesterol levels. They do make us fart too… who hasn’t done a burpee and let one slip? That gas is a byproduct of our gut bacteria breaking down all the fiber. Our gut bacteria love fiber and feed off it! That’s a good thing since it helps increase our beneficial bacteria. Did you know black beans are also a very good source of phytonutrients? Simply put, they have some really good compounds that are healthy for our bodies. Finally, black beans contain a lot of potassium, folate and zinc as well. In short, eat these! Your Recipe

Apples are a good source of quercetin, an antioxidant that has been shown to act like an antihistamine in our bodies helping to reduce allergy symptoms. Quercetin has also been shown to lower blood pressure and possibly play a role in preventing some cancers. Most of the quercetin, as well as fiber, is in the skin or just under so eat the entire apple (minus the core) to get the most health benefits. This time of year, it’s easy with apples in full season. One caution: try to get organic apples as much as possible. ![]() Food Facts - Oranges Might it be more appropriate to say “An orange a day keeps the doctor away?” One may call this a theory, but let’s look at why a daily orange may be more beneficial than an apple a day :
One caveat? It is better to eat the whole orange rather than just drink the fruit juice. To get the fiber and some of the white part left over in the outside of the orange when peeled, skip the juice. This white part, or the pith, has many beneficial compounds like the inside of the fruit.
